Wayanad debris slip: Kerala HC orders state to provide relief to victims and expedite handover of bodies
The Kerala High Court on Friday (July 10) asked the state government to pay compensation to the victims of the Wayanad debris slide and meet the treatment costs of the injured.
The court further ordered the state to hand over the bodies of the deceased to their families as soon as possible. The state informed the court that the search for the missing persons was carried out by active digging, dog carcasses and human labor.
The incident occurred on July 7 with a debris slide at the entrance of the twin tunnel under construction at Kalladi in Wayanad. The site is located near Chooralmala, where a massive landslide occurred in 2024.
Divisional Justices AK Jayasankar and AK Preeta were considering the state’s report on the recent disaster in a suo motu petition initiated after the tragedy in 2024. It was informed that the state had issued directions in May to stop construction activities at the site.
