
A representative of the lecturer of the legislative assembly of Tamil Nadu, K. Pitchandi, opened on Saturday in Tiruvananamalai the gates of the Kupanatham dam in Tiruvananamalai for the irrigation altar with the collector of Tiruvananamalai K. Tharpagaj.
The water was released from the Kuppanatham dam in Chengam near Tiruvannamai on Saturday after the requests of farmers, because it will help them to irrigate 9,808 acrus of unpeeled fields in the region.

The water would be released to the river from the dam and distributed in the channels of the left and right shores for 28 days (within 3 May) for irrigation, on average 2402 Cusecs water. This initiative comes as a sowing for the Paddy season in the region. Water from the neighboring Sathanur dam will help irrigate more than 45,000 acres of agricultural land in the district. The water from the Kuppanatham dam, which has a total storage capacity of 700 MCFT of water, would benefit farmers in 40 villages in Chengam and Kalasapakkam Taluks. Currently, excess water from the dam is discharged to 47 irrigation tanks in the district, thus recharging the water surface in the villages and around them at the foot of Jawadh hills.
