Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer continues to recover in a hospital in Sydney after sustaining a serious injury during the third ODI against Australia. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed that he suffered a lacerated spleen with internal bleeding after attempting a difficult catch to dismiss Alex Carey off the bowling of Harshit Rana. Although Iyer initially walked off the field with the help of a physiotherapist, his condition later worsened, requiring immediate hospitalisation. Subsequent scans confirmed a ruptured spleen and an injury to the left lower ribcage, after which he was transferred to the intensive care unit for close monitoring.
In a statement, the BCCI said the injury was immediately identified and the internal bleeding stopped. “His condition is now stable and he continues to be monitored. Repeat scans carried out on Tuesday 28 October showed significant improvement and Shreyas is on the road to recovery,” the council said, adding that its medical team would continue to monitor his progress in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India.
Ahead of the T20I series against Australia in Canberra, Suryakumar Yadav said he was relieved to know that Shreyas Iyer’s health was improving. “See, we are not doctors. When we saw from the outside, when the catch was taken (by Shreyas), it looked normal,” Suryakumar said. “But later we were told that his condition was serious and needed immediate attention. We spoke to him after that. When he spoke normally, we felt better because the doctors and physios told us that this is an unfortunate incident that happens very rarely. But sometimes rare incidents happen to rare talents.”
“God is on his side,” Suryakumar added. “He is recovering really well, the doctors are supporting him and the BCCI is fully supporting him. He will recover soon and then we will take him home with us.”
It is evident that BCCI’s Head of Medical Services, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, praised the medical staff at the scene for their quick response which helped to avert a potentially critical situation. Sources said Iyer’s family members are expected to travel to Sydney soon to be by his side as he recovers.
