Virat Kohli’s recent run with the bat took another blow in India’s second ODI against Australia in Adelaide on October 23 when he was dismissed for his second consecutive duck. After being bowled by Xavier Bartlett, Kohli briefly considered a review but sought the advice of teammate Rohit Sharma.
Rohit, clearly reading the situation, told him to leave as he believed the ball had hit the stumps. It was the first time in Kohli’s ODI career that he was dismissed for back-to-back ducks, a rare low point for a superstar.

The moment left fans disappointed but also thoughtful. As Kohli waved to the crowd at the Adelaide Oval as he made his way back to the pavilion, chatter of retirement immediately resurfaced on social media, with many wondering how long he and Rohit Sharma could continue at international level and whether they would feature in India’s 2027 ODI World Cup plans.
Kohli’s woes followed a similar start in Perth, where he was destroyed by a wide delivery from Mitchell Starc in the series opener.
Kohli’s sad Adelaide swan song
Adelaide Oval has been the stage where Virat Kohli’s class has often shone brightest. He first caught the attention of the cricketing world there in January 2012 when he compiled a measured 116 in the fourth Test that established him as a serious talent in red-ball cricket. In the 2014–15 Border-Gavaskar series, he again dominated the field with two hundreds of 115 and 141, which reinforced his ability to control the match and his dynamism.
Over time, Kohli added white-ball heroics to his resume in Adelaide, including a memorable performance against Pakistan in the 2015 World Cup. Yet, in what could have been his last appearance at the iconic venue, his outing ended in just eight balls.
After Kohli’s early departure, Rohit steadied the innings with 73 off 97, building a 118-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer and stabilizing the Indian innings. This was a remarkable improvement after his own dismissal for just 8 in the first ODI and his innings helped ease the pressure after the quick departures of skipper Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli.
