FINALLY, HOW IT HAPPENED
India were put into bat by South Africa after they won the toss. Looking for redemption, Shafali Verma scored a brilliant 87 for the hosts and put on 104 runs with Smriti Mandhana at the top. The run rate slowed a bit for India with the wickets of Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet but Deepti Sharma was there to score 58 off 58 balls to steady the ship.
Richa Ghosh also came up with a cameo of 34 off 24 balls to finish on 298 as South Africa needed a record chase to win.
South Africa got off to a slow start but slowly came to life thanks to the chase with Wolvaardt leading the charge. India got the first breakthrough with the dismissal of Tazmin Brits. Sune Luus and Wolvaardt looked to be taking the game away the moment Shafali turned the ball around.
Wolvaardt and Dercksen made the Indian fans sweat at one point before Deepti changed the game in quick succession with wickets from both the batsmen. In the end, De Klerk couldn’t finish the job as Harmanpreet Kaur took the last catch to win for India.
