Greek airports halted arrivals and departures on Sunday due to unspecified problems with radio frequencies, according to Greek state television and the aviation authority. Authorities said they are investigating the cause. While some flights were handled within the Athens Flight Information Region (FIR), airport operations faced restrictions for security reasons, the Civil Aviation Authority added.
Flight tracking data showed that Greek airspace was largely empty. State broadcaster ERT said arrivals and departures had been suspended since 9:00 a.m. local time (07:00 GMT), showing crowded scenes at the departure terminal of Athens’ Eleftherios Venizelos airport.
According to Reuters, the broadcaster said flights had been diverted to neighboring countries. In Israel, an airport authority spokesman said Greek airspace was closed until 4:00 p.m. local time and advised passengers to expect delays in arrivals and departures.
