World number 10 Daniil Medvedev suffered a stunning 0-6, 0-6 defeat by 90-ranked Matteo Berrettini in the third round of the Monte-Carlo Masters, smashing his racket seven times in visible frustration. The 2021 Wimbledon finalist produced a flawless performance in a match that lasted just 49 minutes, leaving Medvedev without a single match.
The defeat marked the first time in Medvedev’s career that he failed to win a game in a match, underscoring Berrettini’s utter dominance on clay.
“I think it was one of the best performances of my life,” Berrettini said. “I only missed three shots in the whole match and it’s not easy against a difficult player like Daniil. The game plan worked perfectly and all my guns were firing.”
“I faced two break points in the first game but after that I felt I was playing better than him. I didn’t expect to win 6-0, 6-0 but I stayed focused because you never know – it can take just one break to change a match,” he added.
Berrettini has been in remarkable form this week, going unbeaten in his opening two matches, including a 4-0 lead when Roberto Bautista Agut retired in the first round. The 29-year-old former Top 10 player will next face either Joao Fonseca or Arthur Rinderknech in the third round.
MEDVEDEV’S MATCHES ON CLAY
Competing on clay for the first time this season, Medvedev struggled on Court Rainier III, committing 27 unforced errors and failing to create a single game point on his serve. The 30-year-old has enjoyed a strong start to the year on hard courtswon titles in Dubai and Brisbane but failed to translate that form to clay.
The match also marked Berrettini’s first ever double bagel victory on tour and his first Top 10 win since defeating Alexander Zverev in Monte-Carlo last season. The result inevitably drew comparisons with Alex de Minaur’s dominant 6-0, 6-0 quarter-final victory over Grigor Dimitrov at the 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters, underlining how rare and emphatic such scores are at the highest level.
