D Gukesh was a broken heart and covered his face with his hands after Friday 6th June disappeared into the Norwegian chess title after the loss of American grandmother Fabiana Caruan. The loss of the world champion meant that Magnus Carlsen won his seventh Norwegian chess title after drew against Arjun Erigaisi.
The game was not easy for Gukesh because Caruana had an early advantage in the competition. The eighteen -year -old tried to return in the game, but he had no time on his side and eventually made a massive mistake. Instead of taking the bishop with his queen, Gukesh promoted a pawn for the queen and went directly to the knight of the fork that would see him in a piece in the end game. Gukesh immediately knew his chances of the title had evaporated before his eyes and offered the American grandmother Handshake for the remaining two seconds.
Gukesh seemed that after the game had happened and put his head on the table and covered his face with his hands when the commentators were also stunned by what happened in the final stages of the game. Below you can see the whole video:
The result also meant that Gukesh slipped third in the ranking when Caruana took home three points and moved to a second. Gukesh ended the tournament 14.5 points.
After his victory in the title Carlsen, he said that both Gukesh and Erigaisi were very good, but still need a little more time to prepare.
“They are all very good (Gukesh and Arjun), but they still need a little time to prepare. We also have a tournament at the same time in Armenia, where Pragg (R Pragggnanandhaa) and Aravindh Chithambaram showed very good chess,” Carlsen said.
Carlsen also said that his loss to Gukesh in the tournament is one game that stands for him.
It is not a positive memory, but a game that protrudes is a game against Gukesh, ”said Carlsen.
