Erling Haaland mentioned Jamie Carragher’s ongoing feud with Mohamed Salah as he made a light-hearted remark about the former Liverpool defender following Manchester City’s 2-1 Champions League win over Real Madrid on Wednesday.
Carragher has been at the center of a major talking point in English football this week after launching a strong criticism Salah’s recent behavior and performances at Liverpool. His comments sparked widespread debate, with the story dominating analysis and discussion across media platforms. In that context, Haaland alluded to Carragher’s increased presence in the news cycle when he spoke after City’s win at the Santiago Bernabeu.
“I’m nervous to see Jamie Carragher in the studio now,” Haaland said. Keeping his tone playful, he added: “I think I have to say Rdiger now because Carragher is a bit of a loose cannon now so we have to be careful.”
Haaland’s comments came after he scored the decisive penalty in a game where City recovered from an early setback. Real Madrid opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Rodrygo finished low for a corner after a counter-attack. Despite Madrid’s strong start, defensive errors before half-time allowed City to take control.

Nico O’Reilly equalized in the 35th minute after reacting quickly to a deflected ball from Thibaut Courtois, who failed to keep Josko Guardiola’s header. Eight minutes later, Antonio Rdiger was penalized for bringing down Haaland in the box. After a VAR review, referee Clement Turpin awarded a penalty and Haaland confidently converted his first goal at the Bernabeu.
City enjoyed long periods of possession in the second half and Courtois made several crucial saves to keep the hosts in contention. Real Madrid’s best chance came late on when Endrick hit the post, but they could not find an equalizer as frustration grew among the home supporters.
The win moved Manchester City up to fourth in the table with 13 points, while Real Madrid dropped to seventh with 12.
Haaland’s brief comments offered a lighter moment on a night that boosted City’s European campaign, and came amid a wider debate surrounding Carragher’s public criticism of Salah.
