Ensuring proper arrangements for waste management will be a priority area for the newly formed Eloor Municipal Council under the Left Democratic Front (LDF), according to its chairman Laiji Sajeevan.
The intention was to continue various projects initiated by the previous left-led council, she said on Monday (29 December 2025). Ms. Sajeevan pointed out that a proposal to formulate an annual calendar of activities related to waste management would be submitted to the council for approval. It would outline plans to strengthen existing waste management projects in the annual plan, she said.
Eloor municipality has achieved ‘Wasteless’ status under the government’s ‘Malinyamuktha Keralam’ initiative in March 2025. It has earned the status for its initiatives to ensure proper segregation, collection and processing of non-biodegradable waste as well as source-level management of food waste. The civic body has achieved 100% target in collecting user fees from waste generators by deploying Haritha Karma Sena (HKS) members in all wards. They deal with door-to-door collection of non-biodegradable waste.
Ms. Sajeevan said that the emphasis would be on ensuring scientific treatment of waste generated in various departments. The civic body had earlier approved an ordinance to ensure scientific collection and disposal of plastic waste, following a directive by the local government department to initiate steps to curb the plastic menace. The “Plastic Waste Management Regulation” specified the obligations of waste generators and civic associations in accordance with various environmental laws.
