Washington, DC, filed a federal lawsuit against US President Donald Trump’s administration on Thursday (September 4) on the deployment of National Guard soldiers in the capital, which could escalate tensions between the Republican President and the city democratic leaders.
A court lawsuit filed by DC General Brian Schwalb is looking for a court order blocking deployment. He claims that sending armed soldiers to the police is unconstitutional and violates several federal laws.
“Armed soldiers should not be police US citizens on American soil,” Schwalb said in the post x. “The forced military occupation of the Columbia district violates our local autonomy and basic freedoms. It must end.”
Deployment
Last month, Trump put on the National Guard soldiers in Washington and claimed to “restore law, order and public security”. The President also built the city metropolitan police department under direct federal control.
The White House spokesman Abigail Jackson prevented this event and said: “The president was to deploy units to protect federal assets and help the enforcement.
Trump also threatened to expand its federal intervention on other democratic cities, including Chicago, framing the deployment as urgent measures against crime, despite decreasing murder and burglary in these cities.
Legal claims
Thursday’s lawsuit claims that the deployment of the National Guard units without the mayor Muriel Bowser violates the law on the domestic rule provided by DC local government. The complaint also refers to the law of Posse Comitatus, which limits the use of the army for domestic law enforcement.
