Major US cities, from Washington DC in the north to Maine in the west, are bracing for heavy snowfall of up to 4 inches this weekend.

Northeastern cities, which have experienced severe snow deficits for years, are likely to see light snow this weekend as a weather system moves southeast.

According to the New York Post (NYP), citing the FOX Forecast Center, those areas are likely to see 2-4 inches of snow, with higher amounts locally possible.

Most of the snowfall is expected in areas located west of Interstate 95 (I-95), a major U.S. highway that runs along the U.S. East Coast through cities such as Washington, New York, and Boston.

As the day continues, temperatures are expected to rise into the mid to upper 30s on the Fahrenheit scale – roughly 2°C to 4°C. At these temperatures, snow does not last long and often turns into rain.

In coastal and eastern areas, therefore, snow is likely to turn to rain, and if any does fall, it is unlikely to settle or stay for long, especially later in the day.

The NYP report said an area of low pressure expected to drop snow across Georgia and the Southeast through Sunday is likely to move northeast, bringing snow from the mid-Atlantic to New England.

Major northeastern cities like Philadelphia, Boston and New York could see several inches of snow by Sunday afternoon.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, an area of low pressure is moving closer to the East Coast than originally thought, which could mean heavier snow in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and across Maine.

However, according to the weather agency, it is too early to say exactly how much snow is expected in these areas.

It also predicted that the system will move a little slower than forecast, leading to snow beginning to fall from Virginia through the Tri-State area in the morning hours. From there, the snow will spread into Rhode Island and Massachusetts in the afternoon.

By Monday morning, the snow is expected to wrap up as the system moves into the Canadian Maritimes, the FOX Forecast Center said.

5-year snow deficit

The snow offers some major cities in the region a chance to climb more out of their 5-year snow deficit, the NYP reports.

As of 2021, Washington, DC is 25 inches below average, while New York is nearly 70 inches in the negative for snow. However, Boston takes the lead with 103 inches less snow than average.
