Warning of possible increase in diseases during monsoon in Palakkad
The district administration has issued a warning about the possibility of disease outbreaks during the monsoon and urged the public to take precautionary measures against communicable diseases.
District Collector MS Madhavikutty emphasized the need for vigilance and public cooperation at a meeting called to assess monsoon disease preparedness.
The meeting considered measures to address the possible increase in diseases such as dengue fever, leptospirosis and hepatitis A during the rainy season. The departments were ordered to strengthen supervision and conduct joint inspections.
Special attention will be given to Akathethara, Puthupariyaram and Kumaramputhur panchayats where higher number of dengue cases have been reported.
The meeting was told that exposed barrels, tanks and other water storage containers in households could become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. The Kerala Water Authority and local self-government institutions have been tasked with jointly inspecting the affected areas and submitting reports to ensure adequate supply of drinking water.
Preventive steps, including measures to prevent water stagnation and maintain cleanliness in public areas, will be implemented with the support of local authorities. Farmers and people involved in home gardening were also advised to take precautions against leptospirosis.
Meanwhile, a nationwide filariasis eradication campaign will be conducted in the district from May 25 to June 10. Antifilarial drugs will be distributed by health workers and trained volunteers.
Children under two years of age, pregnant women, terminally ill patients and bedridden elderly persons will be exempted from the drug distribution program.
Ward-level awareness campaigns will be organized in collaboration with local government institutions and community groups. Health officials said special awareness drives will also be conducted among students, migrant workers and tribal communities to ensure wider public participation in the campaign.
