Waqf Board to support government’s efforts to resolve Munambam dispute, says chairman

MC Mayin Haji, Chairman Keralam State Waqf Board of Trustees.

The newly appointed chairman of the Keralam State Waqf Board, MC Mayin Haji, said the board would support the government’s efforts to resolve the contentious Munambam land dispute.

“It is up to the government to decide and the board will stand behind it,” he told reporters on Friday in response to questions about whether the board would consider the concerns of affected families on humanitarian grounds. He said the matter is pending in the Kerala High Court and the Waqf Tribunal.

The reconstituted Waqf Board under his leadership met here for the first time on Friday. Mr. Hadji said the agenda consisted mostly of routine administrative matters.

Thodiyoor Muhammad Kunju Maulavi, general secretary of Dakshina Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, who was included in the reconstituted council, said he would resign after consulting the government. His decision came after the government worked out a solution to ensure representation for the Samastha Kerala Jemiyyathul Ulama faction led by Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliar, which expressed displeasure over the lack of representation in the reconstituted council.

People’s Democratic Party members staged a protest against the dissolution of the previous board at the State Waqf Board headquarters here on Friday. They claimed that the reconstitution was politically motivated.
