VSSC Central School at Thumba, an educational institution operating under the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC), is celebrating 50 years.
ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan will inaugurate the year-long Golden Jubilee celebrations on October 18. Established for the children of VSSC employees, the school had humble beginnings. Commencing operations on 28 June 1976, it was initially housed in two Type II quarters in the VSSC residential colony. Back then, it had three teachers and 28 students across classes I to V.
In 1979, the school was upgraded to a secondary school. After the adoption of CBSE curriculum, affiliation was ensured for classes IX and X in 1980. The first batch of class X achieved 100% pass in AISSE examinations in 1982. The school was upgraded to higher secondary level in 1987.
VSSC Central School is gearing up to celebrate its 50th anniversary with a number of year-round activities, according to VSSC. VSSC Director A. Rajarajan, Liquid Propulsion Systems Center Director M. Mohan, ISRO Inertial Systems Unit Director L. Sowmianarayanan, VSSC Chief Controller Manoj C. and Harikrishnan R. Group Director, Technology Transfer and Documentation Group (TTDG), VSSC, will be present at the inaugural event.
