Meaning of Vrishchika Sankranthi
There are a total of twelve Sankrantis per year in the Hindu calendar, each Sankranti marking the transition of the Sun from one zodiac sign to another. “All the twelve Sankranti can be divided into four categories which are known as Ayan, Vishuva, Vishnupadi and Shadshitimukhi Sankranti….Among all the Sankranti, Makar Sankranti is the most important and is observed all over India,” says Drik Panchang.
It is important to note that although Sankranti days are considered good for charitable activities, all auspicious ceremonies are avoided on this day. Each Sankranti has spiritual significance and is believed to influence business, health, weather and overall worldly affairs.
The Sun’s movement from Tula Rashi (Libra) to Vrishchika Rashi (Scorpio) is believed to take place on Vrishchika Sankranti, influencing human behavior and worldly trends. It is a time of introspection and self-purification, symbolizing transformation, courage and hidden strength.
Sankranthi rituals
On this day, devotees pay their respects to the Sun God. They wake up before sunrise, bathe sacredly in sacred rivers or bodies of water and offer Arghya to the Sun God. From giving alms to observing fasts, these activities are considered very auspicious on this day.
Next Sankranti in 2025
The last Sankranti of the year, Dhanu Sankranti, will be observed on December 16, Tuesday.
