Former US Vice President Kamal Harris described in detail why she finally chose Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running friend in the 2024 elections, instead of her first election Pete Buttigieg.
Harris, in an excerpt from her upcoming memory, 107 days, acquired by the Atlantic, described the Buttigieg, openly homosexual former secretary of transport, as her “first choice” for the Vice Presidential Slot, but later concluded that he was a “too much risk” for the ticket.
“Buttigieg would be an ideal partner – if I were a straight white man,” Harris wrote.
She added, “But we have already asked for a lot of America: accepting a woman, a black woman, a black woman married to a Jewish man. Some wanted to tell me, screw it, let’s do it. But knowing what was at stake, it was too much risk. (Atlantic)
Selection Tim Walz
Finally, Harris chose Tim Walz, Governor of Minnesota, as her running friend. The ticket continued to lose popular vote, election universities and every rocking state to Donald Trump in 2024.
Praise for Buttigieg
Harris emphasized Buttigieg’s qualities in her book and called him “a sincere civil servant with a rare talent that he is able to limit liberal arguments in a way that allows conservatives to hear them.”
“I love Pete,” she wrote. “I like to work with Pete. He and his husband, Chasen, are friends.” (Atlantic)
Buttigieg’s political future
Pete Buttigieg, who first gained national attention during the democratic presidential primars as the mayor of South Bend, remains a prominent figure and is considered a early favorite for the democratic nomination 2028.
