Despite a major setback in the local body elections, the CPI(M) continues to insist that it has committed no mistakes and that the fault lies with the people, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala said here on Tuesday, launching a scathing attack on the Left leadership. He said the party’s refusal to introspect even after such a defeat should prompt the public to think seriously about its future, and warned that if the current approach continued, further electoral upheavals awaited the left.
“With such a chief minister and party secretary at the helm, one can imagine where the CPI(M) is headed,” he said, adding that the opposition need not explain it to the people. “The public is already experiencing the consequences in their daily lives,” he said.
He said that the Left Democratic Front was voted out because common people are reacting to the harsh realities they face in everyday life. “If the left’s explanation is that the people made a mistake and the government did nothing wrong, then all I can say is, God help them,” he noted.
At KC(M)
He told the Kerala Congress (M) (KC(M)) that the party currently remains with the LDF and has not yet held talks with the UDF. Whether there will be talks or a realignment in the future cannot be predicted now, he said, adding that it would be inappropriate to talk about fielding a party that is still part of another front.
However, he emphasized that the UDF is witnessing steady expansion in a broader sense. “People who are against the Left government, who want democracy to prevail and secular values to be protected, are increasingly coming closer to the UDF. This is our real expansion,” he said.
Noting that several movements and individuals are coming in support of the UDF, he expressed confidence that more people from the LDF, BJP and other political formations will gravitate to the front. “Parties are not important to us, people are. Our primary task is to mobilize public support and strengthen the UDF. Decisions on alliances rest with political parties,” he added.
