The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered a special summary review (SSR) of electoral rolls in conflict-torn Manipur. In a statement on Friday (October 16, 2026), Arun Kumar Sinha, Chief Electoral Officer of Manipur, said that January 1, 2027 will be the qualifying date for the state SSR.
“The SSR will facilitate the registration of voters in a special procedure which is conducted to cover all eligible voters in all assembly constituencies for the registration of omitted, youth and first-time eligible voters with reference to the date of qualification… along with seeking advance applications for the three subsequent qualification dates of April 1, July 1 and October 1, 2027,” the statement said.
According to the schedule, the rationalization of polling stations will be completed by November 2, ten days before the publication of the integrated draft voter lists. The final electoral rolls will be published on January 4, 2027, after claims and objections have been settled by December 28.
Manipur’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls was concluded in September. The names of 1,32,456 voters were deleted after the exercise, leaving the state with 19,60,620 eligible voters.
Manipur has 60 assembly points, 40 in the Imphal and Jiribam valleys dominated by the Meitei and 20 across the hills shared by the Naga and Kuki-Zomi people.
Assembly elections in Manipur are scheduled for March 2027. In the 2022 polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party won 32 seats, followed by the National People’s Party with seven, the Janata Dal (United) with six, and the Congress and the Naga People’s Front with five each. The Kuki People’s Alliance won two seats while the Independents won three.
