Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials swung into action after a brief spell of rain and strong winds created chaos in the city on Sunday evening (May 24, 2026).

While the day started with high temperatures, the weather changed in the evening. According to the Directorate of Economy and Statistics, the city recorded only 6.5 mm of rainfall, but the wind speed reached 32 km/h, which is considered moderate.

The strong wind overthrew small trees, billboards and banners, which were later cleaned up by municipality workers. Apart from its own vehicles, the corporation has also deployed private earthmoving machines to ensure speedy clearing of the roads. Power cuts were also reported in many areas of the city as strong winds continued for nearly 30 minutes.

Officials from the Engineering and Sanitation Department of the VMC conducted field inspections and initiated immediate measures to prevent waterlogging and special attention was paid to main roads, low-lying areas and busy traffic junctions where machines were used to remove standing water.

VMC Commissioner Dhyana Chandra HM monitored the situation and instructed officials to remain alert and respond to complaints immediately.
