Guest lecturers of a government college staged a protest outside the office of the joint director of the higher education department here on Wednesday, appealing to the state government to continue their services.
The protesters, who rallied under the banner of the State Guest Lecturers Coordinating Committee, alleged that the government had ignored the lecturers, who had served for years on low wages. Up to 6,000 lecturers lost their jobs due to the change in recruitment guidelines.
Somashekhar Shimoggi, state president of the committee, demanded that the government should retain all guest faculty without dividing them into UGC qualified and non-UGC qualified. “Seniors who have spent decades learning for low wages are losing their jobs. They have no alternative sources of income. And they cannot get new job opportunities at this age,” he said.
