Virat Kohli (L) and SHUBMAN GILL (R) led India in England and had an excellent scoring run. (Figure: X/Getty Images) “I wasn’t even ten percent of it when I was 19.” This is what the Virat Kohli once said of young Sharbman Gill – a line that remained with Indian cricket fans for years. It wasn’t just a compliment. It was admiration, almost respect. And now that Kohli resigned from the test cricket, his words seem almost prophetic. When Anderson-Tendelkar Trophy closed in England with a draw of 2-2, it was clear who became the torch of Indian launch. SHUBMAN GILL, Kohli’s spiritual successor, led not only India as a captain, but also owned instead of No. 4, which Kohli released. And he did it in style.

India and England may have divided the series, but under the surface they tell the numbers of a different story. India dominated and won 33 sessions for 21 England with 18 tied. This depth of control rarely reflects in the drawn series, but this was different, like Gill’s performance. In a world -powered world, debates on heritage, comparison and “better” discussions are inevitable. After such a sensational performance, a naturally comparison between SHUBMAN GILL and Virat Kohli emerged again. But do you compare both tours? This is far from straightforward.

Gill completed a series of 754 runs, most Indian body in one series on English soil, a second only for the legendary 774 Runs Sunil Gavascar in 1971. He won four centuries, including the best career of 269. It was a series for ages. And yet Kohli achieved in 2018, still has a special place in the Indian cricket folklore. He performed 593 runs on five tests in the series, where India lost 1-4. These numbers cannot show that Kohli was the only Indian dough that looked under control, often the only resistance against the tireless attack of England.

During that tour in 2018 stood tall when the world disintegrated around him. None of any teams even exceeded 500 runs in this series. Jos Buttler had 349 runs, Alastair Cook 327 and Joe Root 319. Kl Rahul, another best Indian dough, had 299. The Persian Gulf was sharp. Kohli was a class apart. It now contrasts with the 2025: nine doughs exceeded the 400-Run brand, most in one test line. The previous best was a tour of Australia in 1975-76 West Indies and Ashes 1993, where each of the mustles managed performance. Obviously, it was a paradise of batter.Top Run-Gethers in 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar TrophyPlayerThey are runningAVG100sSHUBMAN GILL (Ind) 75475.404Joe Root (ENG) 53767.123kl Rahul (Ind) 53253.202ravindra Jadeja (Ind) 51686.001Harry Brook (ENG) 48153.442Rishabh Pant (Ind) 47968.422Ben Duckett (ENG) 46251.331Jamie Smith (ENG) 43462,001yasvi Jaiswal (Ind) 4It is a list of running and sparking, which would seem impossible in 2018.The difference lies not only in the dough, but under conditions. In 2018 she played India on classic English green tops. Swing, seams, reflection, ball did everything, all five days. It was brutal. But Kohli was prospering. James Anderson and Stuart Broad stood against the two of the biggest quick pitching players that the game recorded. Anderson made Kohl his bunny in 2014. Four years later Kohl had the last word.Fast forward to 2025. The pitch in England looked very different. Flat, dry and reminiscent of subcontinent traces. The launching was easier and the pitchers tried to have the same impact. It was not a mistake of batter, Gill’s runs were still phenomenal, but the challenge was undeniably different.

Who do you think he had more demanding launch conditions during their series?
Where does it leave us?Gill had a series of his life. He fired like a dream, led with elegance and carried the weight of expectations with grace. Maybe he’ll never touch this series again and don’t need. But Kohli in 2018? That was something else. The lonely warrior fights in the trenches and pulls his team forward in the most difficult conditions. Both series, both men, deserve a celebration. But some shifts live forever, not because of the number, but because of the fight for them.SHUBMAN GILL walks along the way Kohli. And he does it in his own way.
