As India prepare for the much-anticipated ODI series against Australia, former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson believes Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will face one of their toughest challenges yet, especially after returning to international cricket after a long break.
Both Rohit and Kohli, retired from T20Is and Tests, are set to feature in India’s first ODI assignment since the Champions Trophy triumph earlier this year. The 3-match series against Australia, starting on October 19, marks their return to international action after almost eight months. Speaking to JioStar, Watson said that while both the Indian greats remain among the top five ODI batsmen in the ICC rankings, maintaining their dominance after focusing on just one format will require some adjustment.
“It’s never easy to hit the ground running after such a long gap, especially when you’re facing a team like Australia, who have some of the best bowlers in world cricket. It may take them a while to rediscover their rhythm and preparation routines. But with their quality and consistency, I don’t think it will take long for them to be back at their best,” Watson said.
India has entered a new phase of ODI setup Shubman Gill named as the new captain to replace Rohit Sharma in that role. Rohit now returns as a special batsman alongside Kohli in the 15-man squad for the series. With both veterans nearing the twilight of their careers, there is speculation this could be their last tour of Australia – something Watson believes the home fans will appreciate.
“This could be Rohit and Virat’s last trip Down Under and I think the Australian public will use this opportunity to show how much they admire them,” Watson added. “Virat has been one of Australia’s fiercest competitors over the years, always going up against us and never shying away from the competition. But there is huge respect for his size. The same goes for Rohit – a leader and performer. Australians value quality and these two epitomize that.”
During their time away from international cricket, both Kohli and Rohit focused on fitness and preparation for the upcoming long season. Their form will be crucial not only for the upcoming series but also for the hopes of millions watch the duo play for India in the 2027 World Cup.
India are unbeaten in ODIs so far in 2025, boosted by their Champions Trophy win earlier this year. However, the challenge against Australia, a team that will boast bowling heavyweights like Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc India will test even the most experienced batsmen. For Rohit and Kohli, this series is not just about form or milestones, but about reaffirming their legacy against one of the best bowling units in world cricket.
