
Virat Kohli paid a heartfelt tribute to his U-19 teammate and former Punjab medium pacer Amanpreet Singh Gill, who passed away at the age of 36 on Wednesday, May 6. Gill’s untimely death left the cricketing fraternity in mourning.
A former under-19 teammate of Virat Kohli, Gill represented Punjab in six first-class matches and took 11 wickets during his tenure. He was also part of the Kings XI Punjab squad in the inaugural season of the IPL and later contributed off the field as a member of the Punjab senior selection panel. The cause of his death is still unknown.
Kohli told X that he was shocked and saddened by Gill’s passing and offered his condolences to the former pacer’s family.

YUVRAJ, PBKS LEAD THE WAY WITH TRIBUTE TO GILL
Indian legend Yuvraj Singh and Punjab Kings also sent their tributes to Gill. Yuvraj recalled the time he shared the dressing room with Gill and called him a hardworking cricketer who loved the game.
“Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Amanpreet Singh Gill. Shared dressing room in our early days, was a quiet, hard working cricketer who loved the game. Heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. Rest in peace Om Shanti,” Singh wrote on X.
PBKS paid tribute to their former player with a heartfelt post.
“Deeply saddened by the passing away of Amanpreet Singh Shergill who proudly represented Punjab and was part of the Punjab Kings family. Heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the entire cricket fraternity,” Punjab Kings posted on their official Instagram account.
Gill featured in five Youth ODIs and a single Youth Test for India in 2007. In that only longer appearance, he dismissed former Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera. However, he missed out on selection in the Virat Kohli-led India Under-19 cricket team that lifted the U-19 World Cup in 2008.
