Diwali, the festival of lights, is synonymous with work bonuses, gifts and of course sweets. But what happens when the company decides to skip bonuses and all Diwali is reduced to is a box of the infamous Soan Papdi?
A similar incident took place at a factory in Gannaur, Sonipat. However, what the staff did next went viral online and sparked lengthy debates on the internet.
In a viral video, workers are seen throwing boxes of Soan Papdi outside the factory gate to register their protest.
What happened:
Just days before Diwali, a manufacturing plant in Gannaur gifted its workers with boxes of Soan Papdi instead of the usual cash bonuses, sparking immediate outrage. The workers were said to have felt insulted by the sweets.
Frustrated by rising costs and delayed wages that reportedly strained workers’ household budgets, the box of chocolates was not enough to sweeten the festival.
According to media reports, plant executives said the sweets were intended as a goodwill gesture during the festive season.
Authorities confirmed that there was no property damage or violence as a result of the worker’s protest.

In viral videos, workers were seen throwing sweets at the factory gate and chants of discontent echoed through the scene.
Here’s how netizens reacted:
Social media users understood where the factory workers were coming from, but said the Soan Papdi was “actually delicious” and instead of throwing it away at the factory gate, the workers should have given it to poor people.
A user said, “Agar isliye fainki kyoki diwali bonus ni dia, to sahi kia.” But he said that if the employees threw away a box of Soan Papdi because it was not a different kind of sweet, then the employees do not deserve anything.
Soan papdi lovers flooded the comments section saying, “Soan papdi really tasty hoti hai.”
“Actually soan papdi is a really good desi sweet. But somehow it has become a controversial sweet. And people consider it as cheap sweets. But look at the people who can’t afford soan papdi either. If you don’t like it, give it to the poor. But don’t throw it like that,” another user added.
Several users said that the chocolate boxes should have been given to other, more needy people. “How many jugs were found along the way… I gave them to you! It’s not right to throw them away like that… you might as well keep them… it’s over.”
“It’s just stupid to throw food on the floor no matter what. At least just refuse it or leave it in some higher office or something,” said another user.
