In the middle of the resistance from the surrounding areas on Friday (May 23, 2025), the inhabitants of the village of Pangkang in Arunachal Pradesh signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government in Boleng, Siang, Boleng district, Siang.
The statement issued by the Ministry of Information and Public Relations has described the agreement as a “new beginning of community and government cooperation” aimed at exploring “possible ways for long -term local and regional prosperity together with national security”.
Deputy Commissioner Siang, PN Thungon, signed an agreement on behalf of the state government, while Taba Tamut and Bakin Tali represented villagers. The event was attended by Minister Panchayati Raj, Transport and Cooperation, Ojing Tasing and General Secretary of the Party Bharatiya Janata, Nalong Miz.
Mr. Thungon said that the 11,000 MW project, if considered viable and implemented, “promises transformation benefits for the local community in addition to strategic defense and environmental resistance”.
According to the memorandum of memorandum, the 5 GBP Crore Development Package is to be paid in three years to improve infrastructure, medical and livelihoods of programs for families affected projects. It also mandates consultations with participating parties as the project proceeds.
Officials emphasized the strategic importance of the sump and recorded their role in balancing the extensive hydropower infrastructure in China on Yarlung Tsangpo – the preliminary segment of the Siang River in Tibet – while offering economic authorization and access to clean, sustainable energy to the local population.
“The villagers of Pangkang (also called the Kumku) showed incredible wisdom and maturity by deciding to cooperate with the government in making a preliminary feasibility report,” Thungon said. “It is not just about strength or water; it is about using the potential of the Siang river for the collective prosperity of the local area, the state and the nation.”
