Venus Williams has long been expected to return to tennis, driven by anything other than her permanent “love for play” -a maybe, the silent hope that her sister Serena could also be tempted to join her.
After a 16 -month absence, a 45 -year -old woman is ready to compete for 2025 Citi DC Open, her first tournament since 2024 Miami Open, where she lost in direct sets of Diana Shnaider. Since 2023, Cincinnati Masters did not win the singles match and spent most of the last year recovering from the persistent knee injury. But for Venus, there is no return to court about the persecution of victory.
“Why not?” The seven -time Grand Slam champion said with a smile as he asked why he was returning. “This time I hit the ball. And of course I love the game and the hard courts-it’s my favorite surface I feel comfortable for. So all the different factors.”
Venus will face Peyton Stearns in the opening round of Washington-first meeting between them. While a lot of the reflector comes to her return, the attention was not her. Serena Williams, younger iconic nurses and 23 -fold Grand Slam champion, have recently been seen by practicing and supported speculation that she could also consider returning to sport, which dominated for two decades.
Serena officially went to the Open US Open in 2022, but Venus, ever no one to exclude that her sister might not be doing. “I think there is still a bit of sparks,” she designed slightly, although she stopped before any confirmation.
During her time from the tour, Venus was in the commentary and joined the TNT Sports team at the French Open. Looking at this experience, she admitted that it was pleasant and nervous.
“I think it could be very easy to say a bad thing, what I realized when I lived in the air,” she said. “I was like,” Just be careful. Don’t say a bad thing. Don’t be too much opinion, “because I have a lot of opinions and many of them may be unjustified. So I’m glad I got out of it without being canceled! ”
But tennis is a place where her heart remains. “As a young man, I wanted to play a game, be a champion. I loved so much game, I didn’t realize it would be much bigger than me,” she said.
“And when I saw these young women doing positive things with their lives, win tournaments, inspire the next generation, it’s like I could never imagine it.
For now, Venus is back. And if her enthusiasm has a lot to go through, there may be a moment of Williams Sisters to enjoy again.
