Vellore Corporation Mayor Sujatha Anandakumar was among three persons booked by the Sathuvacari police in Vellore for violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for allegedly distributing sports kits to youth in the area.
Police said cases were registered against Mayor Ms Sujatha, Ward 27 councilor Satheesh Kumar and auto driver Gopinath under section 173 (bribery during elections) and section 132 (assault or use of criminal force against a public servant to dissuade them from their duties) on the complaint of election officer Satheesh Velan, police said (Ny023 Bharatiya) Ny23 Bharatiya
Initial investigation revealed that Ms. Sujatha, along with the local ward councillor, had allegedly distributed government-sponsored sports equipment to the youth at the company’s Sathuvacari office a few days ago. She left the scene in a car as residents gathered near the venue.
Police said that subsequently, AIADMK Vellore secretary SRK Appu complained to the election officials about the MCC violation. Following a complaint, election officials attempted to stop the car after it was spotted in the area. However, the car driver Gopinath did not stop the vehicle. After that, the election officials filed a complaint with the Sathuvacari police. Cases have been registered. The police also impounded the car. A probe is underway.
