Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries Bhupathiraju Srinivas Varma on Wednesday announced that work on the proposed bridge across the Vasista, an arm of the Godavari river, would begin soon.

The one kilometer long bridge connects the town of Narsapuram in West Godavari district with Sakhinetipalli Lanka in the construction district of Dr. BR Ambedkar. At present, people from these two districts cross the river on a punt.

Proposed in 2008, Bhumi Puja has been performed for the bridge by all successive Chief Ministers of united Andhra Pradesh. However, the construction of the bridge, which is part of the National Highway-216 project, was stopped after private landowners moved the court to acquire the land for the highway.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Mr. Srinivas Varma told reporters, “All legal hurdles to speed up the Vasista branch bridge have been removed. Once operational, the entire Konaseema, West Godavari and erstwhile Krishna districts will have better connectivity.”
