Vice President JD Vance reaffirmed the interest of Trump’s administration in Greenland during a visit to the US Army Space Base on Friday. Vance talked to reporters and claimed that ensuring a stronger American position in Greenland is essential for American and Arctic security and at the same time criticizes Denmark for its treatment of the territory.
Diplomatic Agreement on Military Power
Vance rejected any idea that the US would use a military action to get control over Greenland, instead defend the diplomatic agreement.
“We don’t think military force will sometimes be necessary,” Vance said. “We think it makes sense, and because we think that people from Greenland are rational and good, we think we will be able to reduce Donald Trump’s agreement to ensure the security of this territory, but also the United States.”
The US expects Greenland to move to independence
Vance suggested that Trump’s administration expected Greenland to eventually become independent in Denmark, when the US negotiates directly with Greenland leaders.
“The president said we have to have more positions in Greenland. We need it again for the security of the US people,” he said. “And what we think happens is that the Greenci choose through self -determination to become independent in Denmark, and then we will conversate with people from Greenland.”
Vance criticizes Danish manipulation with Greenland
Vance accused Denmark of neglecting Greenland and claimed that Copenhagen could not invest in the development and security of the territory.
“Our news to Denmark is very simple: People from Greenland haven’t done a good job,” he said. “In Greenland, you did not get for investment and you have insufficiently invested in the security architecture of this incredible, beautiful land mass full of incredible people. This must change.”
He also claimed that Denmark was too reluctant to the American military presence in the Arctic.
“What the Danish security umbrella meant is that they all handed it all to brave Americans and hoped to pick up the card,” Vance said. “We simply call people in Greenland when the president says,” We must have Greenland, “he says:” This island is not safe. “”
The US sees no alternative to expanding the presence
Vice President of the American involvement in Greenland as a necessary step against global rivals, especially China and Russia.
“What is an alternative? To give up the North Atlantic, give up Arctic China, Russia and other regimes that are not the best interest of the American people in the heart?” Vance asked. “We have no choice. We have to take a significant position in Greenland to keep people safe to keep our own country safe.”
Vance’s notes are likely to increase the tension with Denmark and the Greenland local leadership, which previously refused any US attempts to take control of the island.
