When you are just 15 years old in professional sports, you have to be extraordinarily brilliant in your skills to take on the best in the world and Rajasthan Royals’ Vaibhav Sooryavanshi does exactly that. The teenage sensation’s fearless approach to tackling top-class bowling has attracted widespread attention, including praise from former players.
Sooryavanshi’s rapid rise in a tournament known for its intensity and global talent highlights the growing influence of young players in elite franchise cricket. Former West Indies fast bowler and commentator Ian Bishop believes the youngster’s mindset sets him apart at the highest level.
“I think psychologically or character-wise he’s very tough because he’s going up against a lot of the best bowlers in the world,” ESPNcricinfo pundit Bishop told the media. “So his psychological makeup is effective to take on the best in the world. He has gone up against Jasprit Bumrah. Technically he is unique, his bat swing is more like a baseball style.”
Bishop also pointed out that while Sooryavanshi may have a technical vulnerabilityhis counter attack ability often neutralizes them. “It’s very difficult to say exactly what his weakness is because the back delivery worked against him in the Under-19 World Cup and against Sunrisers Hyderabad. But if you don’t get it right, the same deliveries are going out of the park,” he added.
INDIA’S DEBUT ON THE HORIZON?
Sooryavanshi’s performances highlight both his natural talent and adaptability. The Bihar batsman has already faced elite bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Arshdeep Singh with remarkable confidence, even scoring sixes off some of them.
He also became the fastest player in IPL history to reach 400 runs in a single season and did so in just nine innings at a staggering strike rate of 238.10. One of the standout performers of the season, Sooryavanshi is currently among the top three in the Orange cap list.
While the teenager continues to shine in franchise cricket, conversations surrounding a potential debut in India have intensified. If selected, Sooryavanshi could challenge long-standing records including Sachin Tendulkar as India’s youngest male debutant at 16 years and 205 days and Shafali Verma’s all-time record of 15 years, seven months and 27 days.
There is only speculation about his international future. However, given his extraordinary form in IPL 2026, the possibility is fast gaining traction. Sooryavanshi will be next in action for Rajasthan Royals against Delhi Capitals on May 1.
