UV index rises in Kollam, warning issued

February 15, 2026

As the mercury continues to rise across the district, the District Disaster Management Office has issued an alert. Citizens are warned of high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., and are strongly advised to avoid prolonged direct exposure to sunlight during these peaks to avoid heat illness and skin damage.

The safety advisory issued by the authorities highlights specific high-risk groups to take special precautions, including outdoor workers, construction and road workers, farmers, MGNREGS workers and street vendors. It also applies to those who are constantly on the move, such as fishermen, traffic police, postal and delivery managers, debt collectors and media professionals. In addition, hikers, cyclists and individuals with pre-existing conditions – including skin or eye conditions, cancer and weakened immune systems are instructed to be extra vigilant during this period.

Specific guidelines have been given to educational institutions to ensure the welfare of students. Schools must guarantee the availability of clean drinking water and ensure proper ventilation in classrooms and examination halls. The district collector has directed schools to avoid holding outdoor assemblies and physical education classes during the afternoon. In addition, guidelines have been issued to allow students exemptions from wearing ties and socks during this period of extreme heat.
