On Monday (March 31, 2025) to “respect public feelings”, the main Minister of Uttarakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami announced a change in the names of 18 places located in the districts of Haridwar, Dehradun, Nainital and Udam Singh Nagar.
Mr. Dhami, while issuing instructions for changing the name, said that the step should respect the public sentiment and maintain Indian culture and inheritance.
“The names change so that people can be inspired by big men who have contributed to Indian culture,” he added.

According to the state government, the names of five seats were changed in the Haridwar district. Aurangzebpur in the Bhagwanpur block will now be known as Shivaji Nagar. Ghaziwali in the Bahadrabad block got a new name because Arya Nagar and Chandpur in the same block will now be known as Jyotiba Phuule Nagar. Mohammedpur Jaat and Khanpur Kousyli in the Narsan block were renamed as Mohanpur Jaat and Ambedkar Nagar. Idirispur and Khanpur from the Khanpur block will now be known as Nandpur and Shree Krishnapur. Akbarpur Fazalpur in Rocee will now be known as Vijay Nagar.
In the state of Dehradun, Miyanwala is renamed as Ramjiwala, Peerwala is now called Kesri Nagar, the new name Chandpur Khurd is Prithvi Nagar and Abdulpur will be called Daksh Nagar.
The Nawabi Road was renamed as Atal Marg, while Panchakki on IIT Road will be known as Gowalkar Marg.
Sultanpur Patti Nagar Panchyat Udham Singh Nagar gained a new name as Kaushalyapuri.
