Some Uttar Pradesh Congress leaders on Thursday (February 19, 2026) alleged that the police in many parts of the state are not accepting their complaint against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for registering a First Information Report (FIR) over his alleged communal, unconstitutional comments aimed at creating communal divide.
“We are campaigning to register at least 100 FIRs against the Chief Minister of Assam for his constant blanket statements. Such comments are unconstitutional, against the basic idea of the Republic of India, divisive and aimed at organizing a civil war in the country. Police at many places are not accepting the complaint. Accepting the complaint is a step to register an FIR at 2 places where we are waiting to register an FIR. We are waiting for registration. Otherwise we will move the court,” said the national Congress Secretary Shahnawaz Alam, who is campaigning against Mr. Sarma.
Mr. Alam urged the judiciary to take suo motu cognizance of the alleged statements and initiate action against the Assam Chief Minister. “Mr. Sarma’s communal statements are a matter of urgent public interest and legal action must be taken by the courts,” the Congress leader said.
