The United States Postal Service (USPS) will close all of its post offices on Thursday, January 1, as the world welcomes the new year, according to the official holiday schedule.
January 1st is a federal holiday in the United States and this shutdown will last a full 24 hours, with service resuming on Friday, January 2nd.
USPS New Year’s Eve Operation
However, local post offices will remain open on December 31. Mail will also be collected from Blue Collection boxes. Customers have been advised to the local post office, which may be open late if normal collection times have passed. Both regular and priority Express mail will be delivered.
With the end of the holiday season approaching, shoppers are now rushing to return gifts before the deadline. Ahead of the planned New Year’s closure, shoppers can visit their nearest post office to drop off packages and handle last-minute postal requirements.
The USPS also advised customers to contact their local post offices for specific hours of operation.
USPS Operation January 1st
All local post offices will be closed on January 1st. Shipments of Blue collection boxes will not be accepted. Regular mail will not be delivered either. However, Priority Mail Express will be delivered.
USPS Holidays 2026
After closing on January 1, the USPS will be closed again on January 19, which is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. It will remain closed again on February 16, which is celebrated as Presidents’ Day in the United States.
After January, the next USPS closure occurs on May 25, which is Memorial Day.

Will FedEx stay open on New Year’s Day?
FedEx will also not be open on New Year’s Day, with the exception of FedEx Custom Critical.
FedEx, FedEx Freight, FedEx Office and FedEx Logistics will remain closed on January 1st.
