
Storm warnings and weather advisories prompted several schools to either postpone or cancel classes in the central and northeastern United States on Dec. 2, according to Newsweek. NWS forecasters also warned that heavy snow and slippery roads could hamper morning and evening commutes in Michigan, New York and Washington, DC.
Schools closed due to winter conditions
Due to bad weather, several schools decided to close on December 2nd. In Massachusetts and New Hampshire, several well-known schools will remain closed Tuesday, according to the outlet.
In Massachusetts, The Bement School, Greenfield Center School, Mohawk Trail Regional School District, Neari School and Rowe Elementary will remain closed Tuesday.
Acworth Elementary School, Alstead Elementary School, Barrington Elementary School, Campton Elementary School, Conant Middle School, Cutler Elementary School, Dover School District and Fall Mountain Regional High School will remain closed in New Hampshire.
According to Newsweek, several schools in Michigan and New York are likely to announce closures amid the storm’s progress as well. Connecticut superintendents will decide whether to close their schools early Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, some schools in Pennsylvania, including the Bermudian Springs, Gettysburg Area and Conewago Valley school districts, decided to opt for a two-hour delay on Tuesday. Similar steps have been taken by schools in Virginia, including schools in Franklin and Albemarle County, as well as in Galax City.
Prepare for a winter storm
“Widespread school closures expected in the #HudsonValley on Tuesday,” Washington Post meteorologist Ben Noll reported on X, formerly Twitter.
“It’s December 1st – happy meteorological winter! The Hudson Valley’s first winter storm is gathering in the Midwest on Monday and will arrive in the region Tuesday morning,” he added.
Noll also reported that the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter storm watch for Orange, Ulster, Sullivan and Dutchess counties. The NWS has also issued a winter weather advisory for Rockland and Putnam counties.
In Monday’s forecast, the NWS said much of New England and the Mid-Atlantic will experience increased winter precipitation and possible gusty winds.
“The threat of significant inland snow accumulation is rising, with more than 6” possible north and west of the I-95 corridor, the government office added.
