US President Donald Trump on Tuesday acknowledged uncertainty about the outcome of the US Supreme Court’s ruling on his administration’s sweeping tariff regime. Trump acknowledged that an unfavorable ruling could have far-reaching financial consequences, saying he “doesn’t know what the Supreme Court is going to do.”
“I don’t know what the Supreme Court is going to do,” Trump said during his “special appearance” at a White House press conference on Tuesday — marking his first year in office after taking office on Jan. 20, 2025.
Trump’s comments at a White House press conference came after the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday again overruled a ruling on the legality of the Trump administration’s tariffs on nearly all of America’s trading partners.
What Trump said about the SC ruling on tariffs
“We took hundreds of billions of dollars, and if we lose that case, we may have to do our best to pay it back,” the BBC quoted Trump as saying.
POTUS went on to say that he doesn’t know “it’s going to go very easily without hurting a lot of people,” and claimed that the U.S. has “tremendous national security and no inflation” as a result of the tariffs.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision should determine whether Trump acted within his legal authority as president and whether the tariffs can legally stand.
When is the next decision likely?
The court is preparing to begin a four-week recess, and under its usual procedures for issuing opinions, the next potential date for a ruling on the tariff is Feb. 20, Bloomberg reported.
The Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) has not announced the next date it will issue the rulings. It also does not announce in advance which decisions will be announced on a given date.
Earlier on his Truth Social, Trump bragged that repaying the money would be “an absolute mess” and “almost impossible for our country to pay.” He claimed the refund could reach “many hundreds of billions of dollars”.
