The US Secret Service said on Monday, September 22, that federal agents dismantled the network of devices – 300 SIM card servers and 100,000 SIM cards – in the New York region that was used to threatening higher US government officials, hints of foreign involvement. According to a statement, federal agents have received more than 300 SIM card servers and 100,000 SIM cards at several locations in 35 miles from New York.
The secret service acted quickly to thwart the plot because it realized that any attack could seriously disrupt New York when the world leaders convene for the UN General Assembly (UNGA).
While the secret service did not identify officials who were threatened, the nature of the threat or nations that could participate. Officials said that the secret service was not publicly named any country, partly because of the sensitivity surrounding this week of the UN General Assembly.
“The potential of disturbing our country’s telecommunications, which represents this network of devices, cannot be overestimated,” Sean Curran, director of Sean Curran, said in a statement. Also read | What do you not see at this year’s UN General Assembly? What to expect?
He also said that the probe into the threats “clarifies potential bad actors, that the immediate threats for our protectors will be immediately examined, traced and dismantled”.
Bad actors using SIM card servers and thousands of cards can broadcast anonymous threats and perform attacks such as cellular towers deactivation and stunning communication networks. It was not clear whether the net was associated with a number of incidents at the beginning of this year, when unknown actors set out in front of the Chief of Staff of the White House Susie Wiles and Foreign Minister Marco Rubio. During the summer, the Foreign Ministry’s cable said that an unknown person left voice and text messages for at least five people, including “three Foreign Ministers, Governor of the US and the American Congress member” after creating a signal account that pretended to be Rubio in mid -June.
Britain has already taken steps to limit SIM Farms. In April, the home office announced a ban on ownership or delivery of SIM farms for no legitimate reason, citing their role in the campaigns “Smishing” issued by delivery services or banks.
