US Open: Mirra Andreeva storms into Round 3 as Alexandra Eala continues to play

Mirra Andreeva produced another emphatic performance at the US Open, beating Eva Lysova 6-0, 6-3 to advance to the third round. The fifth seed needed just over an hour to complete the victory and continue her strong run in New York.

It was the first meeting between Andreeva and Lys, but the Russian was only a few steps away from controlling the match. The 2026 French Open champion cruised through the opening set, using aggressive forehands and sharp forehands to move 3-0 ahead before closing it out without dropping a game.

Lys responded early in the second set, holding serve before breaking Andreeva to take a 2-0 lead. The fifth seed immediately halted the momentum, winning the next two games and gradually reasserting her authority as the German struggled to find a consistent path.

Several games went deep in the second set as Lys created opportunities to break back, but Andreeva stayed poised when it mattered. She eventually leveled and converted her third match point to complete the straight win.

The win adds to a breakthrough season for Andreeva, who won her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros earlier this year. She will next face the Czech player Nikola Bartunková, who continues her quest for a deep run in New York.

Russia remains in a tough part of the draw, which also features Coco Gauff, Madison Keys and Daria Kasatkina.

EALA SETS JOVIC SHOWDOWN

Alexandra Eala also advanced to the third round, defeating Ukrainian Oleksandra Oliynyková 6:1, 6:4 in just over an hour. The 17th seed avenged Oliynyk’s earlier defeat in Strasbourg and put on another composed show on the Grand Slam stage.

Eala set the tone by winning the opening four games to complete the first set with 11 winners. Oliynyk made the second set more competitive, but Eala remained aggressive from the baseline and secured the decisive break at 4-3 before sealing the match with a serve winner.

“My patience and the consistency of my focus – I think that was the key to winning the match today,” Eala said.

The Filipinos were supported by a passionate crowd at the Louis Armstrong Stadium, with Filipino flags and signs in Tagalog filling the stands. Eala, who reached the fourth round at Wimbledon this year, said the experience helped her develop into a more complete player.

“I feel like a more mature player now,” she said.

Eala will now face 14th seed Iva Jovic of the United States in the third round after Jovic beat Britain’s Francesca Jones 6-4, 6-4.
