Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Doha, Tehran on Thursday. They discussed “regional developments, their impact on security and stability, and ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions and create an environment for dialogue.”
The talks between Qatar and Iran come amid wider diplomatic pressure on the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier on Thursday, Al Thani and Iranian Minister Araghchi discussed a proposed framework including a temporary joint navigation corridor across the strait and possible cooperation in demining the waterway. Qatar also emphasized the importance of freedom of navigation and continued diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions.

Meanwhile, Iran’s security chief Mohsen Rezaei said Tehran was preparing a list of conditions for opening the Strait of Hormuz in response to the mediators’ request, Reuters reported, citing an interview with Lebanon’s Hezbollah-affiliated Al Manar TV.
Terms may include an end to war in the region, the lifting of US sanctions on Iranian ports, economic aid and compensation. Rezaei added that Iran had agreed to a transit corridor with Oman, part of it in Omani waters and part in Iranian waters, with ships passing through a designated central channel in the strait if the US met Tehran’s conditions.
No sign of negotiations with the US
Washington said there are currently no negotiations between the United States and Iran. Former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News on Thursday, “There are no negotiations going on now, and they will continue until the president feels like they might come to the table in a meaningful way. We haven’t seen that yet.”
US President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social Thursday: “Iran is a failing nation!,” and said Tehran is “begging for a deal” with Washington. “I don’t want to meet, they do. In fact, they are begging for a deal,” Trump wrote.
