Judge Sets $250 Million Bond for Michigan Mom Accused of Keeping 3 Children in Squalor
A Michigan judge has set a record-breaking bond of $250 million for a 35-year-old mother, who is accused of keeping her three children in a state of squalor, forcing them to live in a conditions that were deemed "inhumane" by authorities.
The mother, whose name has not been released, was arrested last week after an investigation by the Michigan Department of Human Services and the Mount Pleasant Police Department uncovered the shocking mistreatment of her children. The three children, aged 8, 10, and 12, were found living in a cramped and dirty room in the family’s home, with no access to basic necessities like clothing, food, or medical care.
Prosecutors say that the mother, who has no prior criminal record, deliberately and consistently denied her children the basic necessities of life, forcing them to live in squalor. The children were found to be malnourished, dirty, and had not attended school for several years. The authorities also discovered that the home was infested with fleas, cockroaches, and rats.
"We are shocked and appalled by the deplorable conditions in which these children were living," said Michigan’s Attorney General, Dana Nessel. "The prosecution will do everything in its power to ensure that this defendant is brought to justice and that these children receive the care and safety they so desperately need."
The judge set the $250 million bond at a hearing on Tuesday, citing the gravity of the charges and the potential risk to public safety if the mother is released. The high bond is a rarity in Michigan, with most bonds typically ranging from $5,000 to $50,000.
The mother is charged with three counts of first-degree child abuse, three counts of second-degree child abuse, and one count of neglect or abandonment of a child. If convicted, she could face up to 20 years in prison.
The Release of the children has been secured, and they are now in the care of the Michigan Department of Human Services, where they are receiving medical attention, food, clothing, and other basic necessities.
