The 11th edition of Ponnyathankam transforms the historic Ezharakkandam into a vibrant arena of martial valor and cultural celebrations.

The week-long festival is jointly organized by Kerala Folklore Academy, Kathirur panchayat and Pattiyam Gopalan Memorial Library, Pulloody. What began in 2015 as a modest Kalari demonstration in a local reading room has since evolved into one of the largest martial arts congregations in the region, attracting participants from across India and abroad.

Large crowds gathered in a festive spirit to witness intense Kalaripayattu fights along with a rich cultural display. Practitioners from all over Kerala entered the ‘angathattu’ to present various training techniques from both northern and southern traditions.

A rare opportunity

Each night unfolds with electrifying jumps, intricate weapon displays, challenging drills and synchronized fight routines, offering the public a rare opportunity to experience different styles of Payyitt on a single platform. The festival also provides a forum for discussions on the philosophy and development of Kalaripayattu.

After Monday’s inauguration, various Kalari groups staged demonstrations. According to the organizers, 24 Kalari groups are participating in the festival, including teams from Delhi and Dubai. A group from the Meitei community in Manipur also showcases their martial arts traditions during the seven-day event. Special stalls were set up with artists from Bengal and Bihar and homestay facilities were arranged for the visitors.

Every evening from 7.30 pm, various Kalari groups perform alongside folk competitions such as Thiruvathirakali, folk dance, Kolkali, Oppana and Duff Muttu. Forms of martial arts from other regions are also presented. Live performances by Vidhu Prathap, Naresh Iyer, Sachin Warrier, Libin Scaria, Ramya Nambeesan, Prajin Prathap, Harishankar and Gowry Lakshmi add to the festive spirit.

QR code

To strengthen the tourist reach, the organizers introduced a QR code-based registration system at the venue. Visitors can scan and register to access videos and photos related to Ponnyathankam and the Thalassery Heritage Tourism Project, providing instant digital access to information on heritage centers and activities in the region.

The week-long festival of martial heritage was inaugurated by Assembly Speaker AN Shamseer at Ezharakkandam on Monday. Describing Ponnyathankam as a festival that has gained global attention, he said the proposed Kalari Academy at Ponnyam would contribute significantly to the overall development of the region. Deputy Inspector General of Police, Kannur Range, Yathish Chandra conducted the flag hoisting ceremony. Kathirur grama panchayat president PP Sujaya presided over the function.
