ATRea, the soil nutrient necessary for the growth of plants, has become a political point of flare between the central government and the Thelangan government. Due to the lack, farmers stand in queues outside the fertilizer shops for hours and hope to ensure urea for their crops. While the ruling congress and the party Bharatiya Janata (BJP) accuse each other of the situation, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) accuses both of them.
In February, the Ministry of Agriculture allocated five types of fertilizers (urea, di-amonium phosphate, Muriate of Potash, complex fertilizers and only super phosphate). This included 9.8 lakh tons of urea for the Kharif season. Although there was a small difference between the demand and the offer of other fertilizers, the urea gap has become a problem. In the official communication, the central government reported Telelangan that in April in August it was given 8.3 lakh tons of urea. However, the state received only 5.32 Lakh tons until August 17th.
Minister of Agriculture, Tummala Nagesware Rao, accused the Center of the Crisis and said that we could not secure the offer. “I wrote independently to the ministers of the unions for agriculture and chemicals and fertilizers to supply the allocated amount of urea. The agricultural officials also addressed letters to ministers of agriculture and chemicals and fertilizers, but in vain,” he said. Mr. Nagesware Rao accused the center of misleading parliament by saying that the state was assigned a sufficient amount of urea and claimed that it did not provide delivery numbers.
Meanwhile, the President of the State Unit BJP, N. Ramchander Rao, claimed that the state government had poorly managed the offer. He claimed that the Center gave Telangana more than the required amount. He accused the state administration of diversion, inefficiency and black marketing. Mr. Ramchander Rao also demanded why the problem appeared only in Telangana.
Mr. Nagesware Rao was facing Madya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Haryana and Pandjab also due to lack of urea. Congress also raised a problem in parliament.
While Congress and BJP are dealing with the War of Words, BRS encounters farmers in fertilizer shops and reminds them that during its regime they are not struggling with such difficulties.
When the crisis stepped up, Mr. Nagesware Rao wrote the Minister of the Union for Chemicals and Fertilizers and asked him to supply at least 3 lakh tons of urea in August in August.
Telangana, like many other states, did not receive the required supplies or indigenous diversity of urea or imported diversity. Problems in domestic production are caused by obstacles to importing key raw materials and an increase in soil nutrient consumption. Import problems are caused by export restrictions on China. India also imports urea from Oman, Russia, Sae, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Algeria, Egypt and Nigeria, except China. Imports differ from 15% to 30% of the total on the basis of local production per year.
India focused on the end of urea imports by 2025 by increasing local production. In 2022, the Minister of the Union for Chemicals and Fertilizers said that new plants would be set up. However, the goal remains a miracle. Estimated urea consumption in the years 2025-26 is about 410 Lakh tons, with an increase expected due to an increase in kharif cultivation.
Telangan’s suffering are enhanced with problems in the operation of Ramagundam fertilizers and chemicals, where since April there was no production for 78 days due to technical defects. From the urea produced in India, Telangana gets most of its offer from the race, which has a production capacity of 12.7 Lakh tons per year.
Nano urea production (liquid) must also be expanded in the country. Also, farmers have not yet received nano urea because this includes additional costs.
In reports on restrictions on China restrictions to India, officials hope that there will be no shortage in the Rabbi season. During the Kharif season, however, there is little hope that it will get another offer from abroad or immediately increase home capacity.
