The Government of Andhra Pradesh has approved the implementation of “Enhanced Energy Efficient Smart Street Lighting System” in all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the state to reduce energy consumption, lower municipal electricity costs and promote environmentally sustainable urban infrastructure.
The initiative will replace conventional street lights with smart LED systems integrated with IoT-based lighting management systems (ILMS), S. Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary, Department of Municipal Administration and Urban Development, informed on Tuesday.
The smart grid will enable real-time monitoring, centralized control, automated fault detection and predictive maintenance, improve the reliability of public lighting and significantly reduce energy consumption.
For implementation, the government will sign a contract with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) to roll out smart lighting infrastructure in municipalities. The project will operate on a performance-based model at a competitive rate of ₹ 175 per light per month inclusive of GST.
Technical supervision and monitoring will be provided by Andhra Pradesh State Energy Efficiency Development Corporation Limited, which has been designated as the Project Monitoring Unit. The agency will support the preparation of detailed project reports, bidding processes, monitoring and evaluation of greenhouse gas emissions.
Mr. Suresh Kumar said that this initiative represents a significant technological transformation in urban service delivery. He said that street lighting accounts for a large proportion of urban energy expenditure and that a smart system will reduce costs while improving efficiency, safety and environmental performance in cities.
