Minister of the Union for power, housing and urban affairs, Manohar Lal, on Friday (July 4, 2025) stressed that the development of cities must go hand in hand with environmental protection, emphasizing the need to maintain sustainability in the foreground of progressive initiatives.
Mr. Lal spoke of the final day of the two -day National Conference on “the role of urban local authorities in strengthening constitutional democracy and building a nation”, which took place in Manesur.
The Minister emphasized the rapid pace of urbanization in India and stressed that both governments and municipal authorities must adequately increase their sensitivity. He called for improved workforce training and efficient use of time and resources to solve newly emerging urban challenges. Mr. Lal, who quoted the data, noted that the urbanization rate in India, which was 20%in 1970, has now increased to 36%and by 2047 it is expected to reach 50%.
He also called on the city local authorities to make a formal home session, chaired by the elected official, in the way of a speaker Lok Sabha or Vidhan Sabha. As he said, it would help support transparency and responsibility in local administration.
Mr. Lal addressed the participants as the main guest for the event and called on the public representative from all over the country to actively support the strengthening of urban local authorities. Furthermore, he encouraged the adoption of the proven procedures presented during the conference, especially those proven by the city authorities recognized as exemplary work to increase the quality of life and infrastructure in cities.
Mr. Lal, who underlined the importance of financial autonomy, said that while the city local authorities receive solid funds from the center and the state government, the achievement of true independence must also include ensuring transparency and responsibility in their operations.
