Several misleading claims of cracking the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination – one of the toughest exams in India – came to the fore soon after the results were declared on 6 March. This year, a resident of Fatehpur village in Ariyaru block of Sheikhpura district in Bihar falsely claimed to have secured the 440th position of the civil services exam.
In no time, Ranjeet Yadav became a celebrity in Bihar, with people – including the local police – showering him with flowers and asking him to give motivational speeches. Residents are said to have congratulated him and the news attracted the attention of local media and political figures. Former MLA Vijay Samrat is said to have congratulated Yadav and presented him with gifts.
Yadav also gave a speech in which he claimed to have cracked the exam by studying only four hours a day.
In a video that later surfaced online, he spoke about the importance of determination and focus.
“Life is a long journey, but there is only one test in it – to stick to the goal. You just have to look at your goal and where it is. When your goal is visible to you, it is easier to achieve the goal. But if you do not see your goal, then even after a thousand attempts you will not achieve anything. Whether it is your mother, father or anyone else who will lead you to your goal, if you do not decide to achieve your own goal, you will not depends on your thinking. “You don’t have to write my destiny. I will write it myself”. Work so hard that one day fate itself will say, “Even though I’m late, I’ve always belonged to you,” he said in the viral video.
However, these claims were later disputed by the local media, which pointed out that the rank mentioned by Yadav belonged to another candidate. A Live Hindustan report said that the candidate who secured the rank was Ranjith Kumar R, a resident of Chikkaballapur in Karnataka.
More cases
This incident is among several similar incidents reported after the declaration of UPSC Civil Services Results 2025.
In another case, Aakansha Singh from Bhojpur in Bihar claimed to have secured 301st rank in the exam. A day later, UPSC clarified that the candidate who actually secured the rank was Aakansha Singh from Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh, who reportedly works as a gynaecologist.
In another case, Shikha Gautam mistakenly believed that she had passed the examination after seeing her name in the result document. She later admitted that she misread the list and failed the Mains exam.
