Public representatives led by Bhimavaram MLA Pulaparthi Ramanjaneyulu appealed to the Andhra Pradesh government to dredge the Upputera, an outlet of the Kolleru Lake, to prevent inundation of crops and surrounding aquaculture ponds in West Godavari district.
Appealing to Water Resources Minister Nimmal Ramanaidu during the West Godavari District Development Review Committee (DDRC) meeting on Saturday, Mr. Ramanjaneyulu said the government could proceed to declare a crop holiday for the dredging of the Upputeru outlet.
Referring to the upgradation of the Godavari delta, Mr. Ramanaidu said that a new survey would soon be conducted for the upgradation of canals. Members of the public and farmers could register their complaints against the irrigation infrastructure, he said.
Attending the meeting, Narsapuram MLA Bommidi Naicker alleged inadequate maintenance of irrigation infrastructure and demanded replacement of sluice gates of the delta irrigation system in Narsapuram Assembly constituency.
To strengthen the banks of river Gosthani, which flows in Tanuku Assembly constituency, MLA Arimilli Radhakrishna demanded that a retaining wall be built along the river.
Public representatives, including Vice-Chairman R. Raghu Ramakrishna Raju, assured the initiative to address the issues related to solid waste disposal in the district headquarters.
A landfill is proposed
Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries B. Srinivasa Varma announced that a two-acre landfill is being proposed to dispose of solid waste collected from Bhimavaram town and its nearby areas.
West Godavari Chief Minister and Power Minister Gottipati Ravikumar has directed officials to submit proposals for the required landfills across the district.
He asked the officials to prepare an action plan for Godavari Pushkarams-2027.
District Collector Chadalavada Nagarani announced that Ramakrishna Mission has committed to donate 100 fishing boats to the fishing people for their livelihood.
