The upliftment of a country largely depends on education as only it can help people grow economically, said G. Viswanathan, Founder and Chancellor of VIT.

Presiding over the alumni meeting of the 2001 batch of BE and B.Tech students organized by VIT at its campus here, he said that education remains the only tool that can bring about a change in the economic situation of the country. It can turn a developing country into a developed one. “No nation can advance without education. Through its STARS (Support The Advancement of Rural Students) initiative, VIT provides free education to deserving students who are poor in government schools,” he said.

The chancellor highlighted the contribution of the Indian diaspora to the growth of the country in terms of remittances. He said that Indians working abroad remit around ₹12,000 crore to the country annually, which is a significant boost to the national economy. “Alumni should financially support special programs and initiatives that provide free education to poor students. The culture of contributing to education should be encouraged,” he said.

On this occasion, the 2001 graduates contributed ₹ 11 lakhs to the STARS programme. Mementos were also handed over to the graduates in the presence of Sankar Viswanathan and Sekar Viswanathan, Vice President of VIT.
