The Uttar Pradesh government on Sunday (Oct 4, 2026) said four new varieties of sugarcane have been released for cultivation, adding that it will help increase both sugarcane and sugar production. The government added that the approved early varieties are better in terms of yield and sugar content.

“Recently, a meeting of the Sub-Committee for Approval of Seed and Sugarcane Varieties was held, during the meeting discussions were held on the release of new sugarcane varieties, with the participation of representatives of the sub-committee, the director of UPCSR, scientists from the UP Council of Sugarcane Research (Shahjahanpur) and the Indian Institute for Research on Sugarcane Content and Yield. New sugarcane varieties were introduced to the UP Council of Sugarcane Research, Shahjahanpur,” Ministhy S., Uttar Pradesh sugarcane commissioner and managing director of State Sugar Corporation Limited, told The Hindu.

“According to the data, the average plant yield of the early maturing variety CoS.23232 was 95.56 tonnes/hectare, which is 9.44% more than the standard variety Co.0238. This variety is resistant to Red Rot and has good ratio performance. After consideration, the favorite sugarcane variety was found as it was found superior to the sugarcane variety.28 on both parameters of sugar yield and yield would prove to be the best alternative for farmers and would contribute to increasing both sugarcane and sugar production,” she added.

Abhishek Anand, Additional Sugarcane Commissioner and UPCSR Director added, “The sub-committee further considered the release of the early maturing sugarcane variety developed by the Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research (IISR), Lucknow. In the sub-committee meeting, a decision was taken keeping in mind the interests of the farmers to declare these six unsuitable older sugarcane varieties as non-negligible older varieties due to their growing area. The sugarcane varieties will be phased out over the next two years.”

“With the approval of new high-yielding sugarcane varieties with high sugar yield, farmers will have a wide basket of varieties to grow; this will lead to increased sugarcane yield and greater economic prosperity for farmers in the state, while the sugar industry will also benefit from improved sugar recovery.
