Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary has reportedly received a death threat from an unknown caller, prompting a review of his security and a police investigation based on a complaint filed in the matter, officials said on Friday (Mar 20, 2026).
Police said the caller was traced to Murshidabad in West Bengal.
Mr. Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Representative) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, received a call around 11 am on March 18 from an unidentified number, officials said.
According to the complaint filed on behalf of Mr. Chaudhary at the Tughlak Road police station, the caller threatened to kill the minister and referred to weapons such as MP5 guns.
The caller also asked the minister if he had seen certain documents sent to him and repeatedly threatened to hang up, the complaint said.
Officials said subsequent messages received from the same number contained threatening notes written on the minister’s “tour program” itinerary. The messages also included location details and voice memos repeating threats.
During further communication, the caller claimed that the information was “sent from above”, causing further concern. All relevant evidence, including call details, messages and screenshots, was shared with police, the complaint said.
The complaint also mentioned suspicious activity near Mr. Chaudhary’s residence, including alleged surveillance by unknown persons.
A few days ago, a white car with tinted windows was spotted near Mr. Chaudhary’s residence for an extended period of time, with its occupants allegedly monitoring movement in the area.
Police said that as per preliminary investigation, the caller has been identified as Mohammad Ismail, a resident of Murshidabad, West Bengal. Efforts are underway to arrest him and find out the motive behind the threat.
They said they are verifying all angles, including reconnaissance activity, and have beefed up security.
